DB & Co… After Hours
Ep. 1 Welcome
For our first episode, we’re introducing ourselves, talking about how DB & Co. came to be, what it’s really been like building the Antique Emporium, and probably getting a little off track along the way.
No script. No idea what we’re doing. Just Dalton & Lance after hours.
Hey, I'm Dalton.
SPEAKER_02And I'm Lance. And you're listening to DB and Company. After hours. Alright, so why are we making a podcast?
SPEAKER_01I don't know, you tell me. Well, so we decided that we bought way too much stuff and we needed somewhere to put it. So we decided to open an antique store here in Tazville. And this is for all the after hours, behind the scenes, crazy finds, anything you could ever want to know about us podcast.
SPEAKER_00You never know what you're gonna see from us. So how was your week?
SPEAKER_01My week was hot. Um, I was in Georgia working all week. You were here holding down the fort. Uh, how did that go? Did you get anything done?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we got quite a bit done. We got a bunch of boards put up. We got some of the walls fixed that we had to do. We got a bathroom painted, some tile ripped up, got some of the necessary things done that we needed to work on. Still like a few more, but we'll get there.
SPEAKER_01You think we're still gonna be ready to open on 1010? October the 10th. I can't wait. Have you seen all the things people have tagged us in that they're buying for all their booths?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's extraordinary.
SPEAKER_01I'm not gonna have any money.
SPEAKER_00I know. I might have to come shop at the store every day, even though I'm gonna be here every day.
SPEAKER_01I think it's my favorite part about having an antique store is we get the preview.
SPEAKER_00But I also really like that we get to see it from the beginning before everything is decorated, and then whenever we let people start moving in, they're gonna be able to decorate their booth. So each person's gonna be different, and like you never expect you can never expect what somebody's gonna do.
SPEAKER_01Do you remember when I thought that we would just get a building and move in and leave it like it was? To begin with, we started out looking for a booth though. That is true. You went to another local antique shop and there were like a hundred people on the waiting list. And what did I tell you?
SPEAKER_00Oh, we need another store.
SPEAKER_01If we have a hundred people that need a space, we need to help them have it.
SPEAKER_00But what did I tell Dalton many years ago? What would I like to have? No, no, no.
SPEAKER_01You said I'd like to have an antique shop. And to clarify, this is an antique emporium.
SPEAKER_00Well, I was trying to be on the small scale of things whenever this all started because we was going to like want a booth or do something small. So I was like, we could start out like that. No, with Dawn, it's over the top, extraordinary. You ain't gonna get nothing small.
SPEAKER_01Go big or go home. What do you think you're most excited about?
SPEAKER_00Seeing all the new faces and meeting all the new people and seeing what they can bring to the table with their NT cutting because everybody's different. I know between me and him, we're totally different on some things. So I can't wait to see all the neat and cool things that they bring in.
SPEAKER_01You know what I think's really cool? What I think it's really cool that we have 50 stick spots here, plus a bunch of wall space that eventually people will have, and that's 50 stick little mom and pop businesses that have a place.
SPEAKER_00And it's also really been intriguing to me that so many local people have really reached out, wanting to help, wanting to get a booth, and everybody just wants to support local, and I'm really for that. Both of us are. We also have another local business, so we like to support local.
SPEAKER_01Our other local business is Wing Kings. It's a little hot right now, but check us out this fall. Best wings you've ever had. All right, so you got a few things done while I wasn't here this week. Did you buy anything while I was gone?
SPEAKER_00Well, I had to go to a few yard sales.
SPEAKER_01A few?
SPEAKER_00Well, I went to one yard sale and then I had a friend that texts me that got a two estates bought out, wanted me to come look at some stuff. And Dalton, what did you encourage me to do?
SPEAKER_01I didn't encourage anything. All I know is that now we have a U-Haul load of stuff that we have to go pick up tomorrow on my day off.
SPEAKER_00And I kind of hope that'll all fit.
SPEAKER_01What all do you have over there? I see you've hoarded up a few things.
SPEAKER_00Well, this one bookshelf behind me I found at a yard sale that these nice ladies had. It's quite old.
SPEAKER_01Um quite old. Hold on a minute. Quite old to him is very different than quite old to the rest of us. How old do you think it is?
SPEAKER_00I would say it's at least 40 or 50 years old.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so nobody take offense to that. I told you it's quite old, it's very different.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I don't know how old it is for sure because it doesn't really have any identifying markers, but it feels heavy duty. I know stuff like that wasn't made. I mean, it was made better back then than it is now. But I think it's just a really cute piece and it could hold a lot of things.
SPEAKER_01What are all those creepy looking clown figurines?
SPEAKER_00Well, I accidentally stumbled upon a Goodwill when I was going to Walmart one day. So I went in there and I went straight back to the back to all the glass stuff, and I saw these this set of clo um glass clowns. It's a set of four. They're each a different sports theme. One's a Can I see one of those?
SPEAKER_01Can I just I think this are they are they heavy?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they're quite heavy. They have a wood base, they're glass, and they're different sports themes. This one is a bowling ball. Is bowling a sport? Yeah, it's a competitive sport. You have multiple teams of bowlers. I don't know if it is nowadays, but at least back in the day it used to be.
SPEAKER_01I wonder what year this is from.
SPEAKER_00I think around the 1970s. The one that you're holding is one of my favorites, but this one right here is also my favorite because it's a baseball um a hindcatcher.
SPEAKER_01Oh, it does say the late 1970s.
SPEAKER_00They're kind of creepy, and I thought it'd be cool for Halloween as well.
SPEAKER_01This is the clown collectible craze of that period. Was there a crown claze?
SPEAKER_00Crown clown craze? As you've already stated, I can't say anything about age because I was not alive back then. But I'm sure they were.
SPEAKER_01What's in that box? Can I see the box?
SPEAKER_00Yes, hold on one second. Now I think this box is quite extraordinary.
SPEAKER_01Extraordinary? The box itself or what's in here?
SPEAKER_00What's in the box?
SPEAKER_01Okay. Old photographs?
SPEAKER_00They're old Polaroids to be exact. And the dates on them are like 1961 and 1962, I'm pretty sure. And they go all the way to 1970.
SPEAKER_01What do you think it's gonna happen with like our pictures? Because we travel a lot. We've taken week, not we somebody has taken thousands of pictures, but they're all in the cloud. What do you think? Like, we're not gonna have a box of these.
SPEAKER_00Maybe by then, like they'll just be digital things floating around everywhere, and you could just click on somebody's life and it shows their pictures.
SPEAKER_01Nobody is scrolling through your 17,000 favorite photographs.
SPEAKER_00Nobody's I'm a big wildlife photographer or landscape.
SPEAKER_01Oh, it's Elvis. Look.
SPEAKER_00And I'm pretty sure that these pictures are live pictures of Elvis performing possibly in New York at Madison Square Gardens. Based off some of the research that we have done. I think the best thing about them pictures is looking through it and seeing their family trips, and they have gone to like national parks, so it kind of hits close to home because that's one of our favorite things to do is go explore national parks. Not in the heat, though. In the winter is the best time. What do you think about all my little dualies that I found over there? Also got them from the best yard sale right down the road with some amazing people.
SPEAKER_01When did you change shoes?
SPEAKER_00Well, I had to run back to the house, so I said, hmm, I better change shoes.
SPEAKER_01Oh, thank you. For those of you that don't know, somebody, not me, likes to wear flip-flops all year long, and I hate them.
SPEAKER_00I would rather go barefoot than wear any shoes. But I was just raised in the country, so I don't need no shoes to do anything. I can outrun anybody in shoe without shoes.
SPEAKER_01That's fine. Wear whatever flip-flops you want to, but it's dangerous. We move a lot of stuff and a lot of it's heavy, and every day I have to worry about am I gonna chop off a toe?
SPEAKER_00Listen, at least my feet ain't getting hot. And you can also see my obsession with some Afghans now. I have collected multiple. Y'all will get to see plenty of them in the store. But I have multiple at home as well that I have on display. But I just think all the work that someone had put into them and the story that they could tell.
SPEAKER_01But I have a bunch at home that I have on display. That means I found a bunch of them and I bought them all and said I was going to sell them, but I decided that I would rather keep them and now they're piled under the coffee table.
SPEAKER_00No, they're not. You didn't even notice them last night, but I had set them around the couch. On the back of the couch to display them. So you see how much he pays attention. What do you think about this amazing Indiana carnival glass blue hen that we have set on this table right now?
SPEAKER_01Well, you know that I am I look, there are a few things that I like, and if I find something and I like it, I want the entire collection. So I have around 43 Indiana glass hens at home, and I already have that one, or it would not be sitting on the table here.
SPEAKER_00Just a little sneak peek. There might be another one that we have an extra one of, but that's that's gonna be hidden until closer time. Hidden. What one do we have extra of? There might be a pink one.
SPEAKER_01Are you sure? Because there's pastel pink and there's pale pink, and there's pink pink.
SPEAKER_00I'm pretty sure that them two are the same color. I'll verify that. We both started the collection, so he can't say that they're just his, because I'm a big fan of them as well.
SPEAKER_01I threaten to sell them sometimes when the market's real high.
SPEAKER_00That's not gonna happen. And I don't know if y'all can see it or not, but I recently went to another antique store and this wonderful lady that we kind of know, I saw this duck painting, or not ducked painting, but this duck photograph um she had it in her booth, so I said, I had to have it. I'll probably put we'll probably put it on display at the store for some decoration and maybe for sale, so y'all might get to see it and buy it. She's opening a booth here, right? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You're not buy it. You're not giving away my duck photograph.
SPEAKER_00Well, the last time I said anything about us not putting something for sale in here, he said everything's gonna be for sale.
SPEAKER_01Well, I mean, everything does have a price. Here's the photograph. Do you know what kind of duck this is?
SPEAKER_00A wood duck.
SPEAKER_01That's correct.
SPEAKER_00We are professional duck hunters. We have gone duck hunting once. Somebody almost set their self on fire.
SPEAKER_01We ain't gonna tell any names, but it was cold and I got a little too close to the heater.
SPEAKER_00But if y'all know, one of us is a way more clumsy than the other.
SPEAKER_01You something I do that just really gets on your nerves.
SPEAKER_00There's a few things, but let's see what might be one thing. Whenever, so I'm a big planner, and I try to plan out a day or a week, and I try to say something about it, and Dawn's like freaking out because I'm overwhelming him and he doesn't want me to plan out his day, but it also stresses me out if I don't have a plan for the day.
SPEAKER_01We were in New York one time. Let me tell you. You know, so we're gonna go to the Statue of Liberty. Lance's mom was with us, and we stopped, we got a sandwich. I thought we had plenty of time to go see Lady Liberty. And we're trying to get across New York. Well, I didn't know that the president was in town and the United Nations and all these people that are important or whatever, and they have all these meetings, and apparently that causes a lot of traffic. Anyway, so we're running a little behind to go to the Statue of Liberty because you have to get on a boat, right on the island, do the whole thing. Somebody is in a panic. We're in a taxi, we're on a subway, we're running down the sidewalk, and he's in a panic. For what reason? I don't know, because the ferry runs every 30 minutes.
SPEAKER_00It stresses me out to be late anywhere. I'm never gonna be late anywhere unless something bad is happening.
SPEAKER_01I mean, sure, we were supposed to be there at a certain time, but we got on a boat, didn't we?
SPEAKER_00But it also said be here by this time, and we was not, so it stressed me out.
SPEAKER_01He was stressed.
SPEAKER_00And if any of y'all know, my dad is also the same way. So it just runs in the family. But Dawn, no. He's not gonna be on time anywhere.
SPEAKER_01I run on my own time. You know, fudge rounds are not what they used to be.
unknownI know.
SPEAKER_00I tried to buy him a box today and he said no, them things just ain't good. And let me tell you, he's done contacted little little Debbie.
SPEAKER_01I did. I called down there at the McKee Bakery. I talked to Lori. That was her name. Hey Lori, if you see this, maybe not. But the quality's back down. It was up for a little while, the quality of FUDROM's back down.
SPEAKER_00You won't ever catch me eating one of them things. I'm not a chocolate fan. I can eat like a Reese cup, but a FUD drum, no, that's too much chocolate.
SPEAKER_01Oh, little Debbie has been there for me my whole life.
SPEAKER_00Now, if you give me a gummy candy, I'll be down.
SPEAKER_01Ain't nobody eating that sour stuff. Ain't nobody wants to go when they eat something. Mm-mm. Not doing that.
SPEAKER_00You can also see the little scarecrow that I recently got. I found it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I was gonna ask you about that because I hadn't heard anything about a scarecrow.
SPEAKER_00Well, me and my mom, we went um to pack up some of the stuff from the estate that we bought. So we decided to go by the carm and he was just sitting there on the shelf, and it was just so cute. So I said, we have to have it.
SPEAKER_01Oh, oh, that's the day you all were working. We're gonna they said, Oh, we'll go over there and box up a bunch of that estate and sell things, and when you get home, you all can go get the big stuff. And by working and packing up, they packed up one car load of things, and then they went to one antique shop, two antique shops, the car, three antique shops, four antique shops. Am I right?
SPEAKER_00Listen, we have been working on this store for multiple weeks and haven't been antique shopping that much. So me and my mom thought it was the best idea to use a little bit of our time to go and get some more merchandise.
SPEAKER_01And let me tell you what they had the nerve to say to me. So a few weeks ago we were in a state sale here in town, and they had two okay, maybe not perfect, but two good Dodge caravans, okay?
SPEAKER_00Not good.
SPEAKER_01And I know a minivan isn't really cool, but if you've ever drove one, they're a pretty sweet ride. I don't know if you've ever drove one, but I learned to drive in one. So they're going to bid, and these minivans are like in the hundreds of dollars. So I'm bidding. And somebody is, don't buy that. We don't need that. What are you doing? You're spending our whole budget on a van. So, whatever, okay. I didn't buy the van. And then they're moving all the stuff. I said, you know, we really need an old beater vehicle so that we don't have to put all this stuff in that in our good cars.
SPEAKER_00I did not say that. I did not say that. I wouldn't ever want a minivan.
SPEAKER_01And I said, Really? You mean like a good Dodge caravan? That would have been good to haul all the stuff in, wouldn't it?
SPEAKER_00No. I'd much rather haul it in the car that I used. But he said that we just got one load the day before. I went over there and packed up a whole bunch of stuff and also used my car and brought a load. And we packed his car to the top, and we wasn't driving back 45 minutes in a day to get another load.
SPEAKER_01He called and said, Well, I gotta get this stuff early. It gets hot over there in the evening. And that's when I was out there working and at 105 degrees in South Georgia outside, and call and tell me it's hot.
SPEAKER_00I was in a closed-up garage with one little fan going. So it was like no air moving. At least it was outside. You had air circulation. I had none.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I should have known. Drinking my water. Feed you water, best water on earth. Not a sponsor, but it should be. I love this water. You know it's never touched by the human hand. So they say. It says on the bottle.
SPEAKER_00Do you believe every label you read? Yeah, why lie? Also, what do you think about my little Indiana glass vase back there? Do they make it in more colors?
SPEAKER_01That was really the question I had.
SPEAKER_00I don't know. I think we should look it up.
SPEAKER_01So, and just so everybody knows, this is all for sale. Except for this picture that's not for sale yet. How do you feel about the paint in here?
SPEAKER_00It is way better than what he started out with liking. I could not have handled the other colors that he picked out.
SPEAKER_01We have an ace hardware just around the corner here. How many trips did you make?
SPEAKER_00Five million. That's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it felt like it. Because most of the time I just walked down there.
SPEAKER_01We tried a lot of colors, and we settled on Kenny Buntport Green, Tudor Brown, and Newberryport, and Newberryport Blue. Those are all from the Benjamin Moore collection.
SPEAKER_00And they all were from like England, right?
SPEAKER_01They're all um the historic collection. So they're all colors that were prominent in 18th and 19th century America.
SPEAKER_00So even our paint isn't antique. Y'all should have seen the colors they picked out first.
SPEAKER_01I thought the 70s would be cool. So we went with avocado green, burnt orange, harvest gold. Was not very flattering. But we tried it.
SPEAKER_00It kind of looked like um a blender had ate up some avocado and some orange and put a little burntness in there and threw it up on the wall.
SPEAKER_01The avocado green, which I do like in furniture, the avocado green did look a little bit like baby poop green.
SPEAKER_00And I'm not a fan of, I mean, I like some orange, but burnt orange, no. I'm not an orange fan. I love Dennis, love some colors, but I am not a personal fan of orange.
SPEAKER_01Rocket type.
SPEAKER_00So listen, I love Dolly Parton, and I'm so sad that she's gone.
SPEAKER_01But can you believe that she died at 80?
SPEAKER_00I mean, she lived an amazing life though, and she's done so much.
SPEAKER_01I thought she'd lived to be 100.
SPEAKER_00But do y'all know how many times I've heard Dalton say, I cannot believe she's dead?
SPEAKER_01I can't. Do you know when I was little, my plan, kindergarten me, was to get a fake mustache, buy a Mustang, which I don't really like Ford. Don't hate me for that, but I was gonna buy a Mustang, and I was gonna take Dolly part on a date, and I believe it was to the McDonald's. Because you know, I was a big spender.
SPEAKER_00But he loved her so much, but he had never seen her in person. And I'm like, I saw her a few times at her Dollywood parades. I never got to talk to her or meet her, but I still saw her, so I can't believe that you've lived seven years before I meet, and you never saw her.
SPEAKER_01Isn't that a shame?
SPEAKER_00I know, and we are literally like an hour at most from Dollywood.
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna ask my mother about it. I really think it was cruel.
SPEAKER_00Well, I love going to Dollywood when I was little. Not so much anymore because I'm not a big amusement park rider, but I'll go for Christmas lights.
SPEAKER_01I love Dollywood. I like the Christmas show. I like the light. I like the pork rinds that they bake back there in the little Craskin village. And I like all that stuff that they make that looks like old antique stuff.
SPEAKER_00I'd really like to go and do the blowing art class up there. It'd be kind of cool.
SPEAKER_01The glass blowing? Yeah. We should make an ornament. Oh, we could make an ornament for the store.
SPEAKER_00Listen, we have so many ideas that is going to come to the store. It'll be like decorations blew up everywhere.
SPEAKER_01We're going to do something every month. We're going to do Halloween. We're going to do Thanksgiving. We're going to do Christmas. We're going to do everything. Oh, I think we need to tell people about our thoughts about why another reason we wanted to owe an antique store was because when we antique, if we go to Clinton, Tennessee or Crossville, Tennessee, or wherever we go, we like to go where there are a bunch of stores. You know, we don't want to drive two hours and go to one store and then the day is over. So a few things we want to do is open early, especially on Saturday.
SPEAKER_00Stay open late because we uh used to work 12-hour shifts to the hospital. So after we got off, you couldn't do anything.
SPEAKER_01And then our hope is that now we have a few stores here in Taswell so people can come spend the day, they can antique, eat at our local restaurant, and make a day of it.
SPEAKER_00Let me tell y'all, there's a new restaurant opened in 2025. It's called Rail Spike Steak. If y'all haven't been there, that place is pretty good. I would definitely go there. James is the owner, and he's always great.
SPEAKER_01And we do have El Mariachi basically in our parking lot, and they have never done me wrong.
SPEAKER_00And also, if y'all love a good drive-in, the frosty freeze has been here for like 75 years, right?
SPEAKER_01I think it was 70. Didn't they have their 70-year anniversary?
SPEAKER_00I can't remember if it's 70 or 75.
SPEAKER_01You know, my grandparents used to go on dates there. And that I mean, well, my my papa's dead, but my mom's like 93, 94.
SPEAKER_00That place has been around and serving great food for a long time.
SPEAKER_01A really, really good hamburger. And a chocolate shake. Get a hamburger, get a chocolate shake, get your top friend teeth.
SPEAKER_00All the things. So one thing that I have realized as working here by myself in this store is working here? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00I mean, the Rome wasn't building a day. You haven't been here.
SPEAKER_01I think by working here he means pilfering through all the stuff he bought.
SPEAKER_00That bathroom didn't paint itself or that tile didn't come in by itself.
SPEAKER_01I'm sorry. You did work for a few hours. Continue. What have you realized?
SPEAKER_00But if you don't lock the door, people will just come in and you'll be up on a lift changing some light bulbs or painting a pole, and they just start talking. And you about jump through the ceiling. Love a good scare. But I was not prepared for some of the moments. Who scared you? Um, one of our um booth people came in one day, started talking. Me and mom was over there carrying stuff in from the car, and the next thing I know, someone says, Hey, me and mom both jump.
SPEAKER_01Well, it's a double-edged sword because I know they scare you. But then I felt real bad when people wanted to come by and look at the store and I'm like, oh yeah, we'll be here all week. Just stop by and we would be in the back and couldn't hear them, and we have plastic over all the windows, so we can't see.
SPEAKER_00Well, while you was gone, I wrote a little note, put some tape on it, and said, Call me if you need to speak to me. I'm in the back. Just not leaving the door unlocked.
SPEAKER_01And the phone service is not good.
SPEAKER_00Which I did bring a little Wi-Fi booster out here, so it's helped while I've been here through the week. Because I've had a few people come out here and pick out some booths that they wanted to be in and wanted to see the spot, especially after we got the walls built and painted everything.
SPEAKER_01Did you call the cable company for the internet, for the Wi-Fi?
SPEAKER_00I did. How'd that go? I need you to speak to them with me because I don't really know what you want, because their phone options are quite different for a business. You can even get an app now that lets you block scammers and they'll let you answer the phone from home. So I was like unsure if we wanted that or if we wanted just a regular old landline.
SPEAKER_01Regular old landline.
SPEAKER_00So I didn't want to do all that without talking with Dalton. And whenever I tried to call him this week, it was always a problem because he was trying to work.
SPEAKER_01It was hot. Do you remember that time we were driving back from out west and I called the cable company to negotiate on my internet?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. They told him that he couldn't get a deal, and he said, Well, I'll just cancel my plan and resign.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because my internet kept creeping up at home, and it was like $75 and then $85, and then one month it was $95. So I called. And I'm looking online, and they have these specials. It's like $70 a month for faster internet than I had. So I call. And the lady says, Well, that's only for new customers. And I said, Well, I'm not under contract, right? It's just a bull, no, and I said, So I'm out of town. I could just turn my internet off and then reactivate it in a month. Well, yeah, technically you could do that. And I said, Well, okay, let's just do that. Well, no, no, no, no, no. Hold on a minute. And my internet's now $75 a month.
SPEAKER_00And we got a internet booster as well. Because we wanted some extra Wi-Fi.
SPEAKER_01And he got it all for that. So if you need a will and deal, call me.
SPEAKER_00Let me tell you, penny puncher over here on some things, extraordinary on other things.
SPEAKER_01What do you mean? Everything I do is cost effective.
SPEAKER_00Do you know any pictures of trucks I've been sent this week for a work truck? That's a need. I think it's want. What is an antique item that is popular right now that you don't think it should be?
SPEAKER_01An antique item that's popular that I don't think should be. What's popular right now? Because I kind of get in my own world the things that I like that I think are popular. I think it should be. I mean, I like them, but I'm not paying $200 for a beat-up toy.
SPEAKER_00No. Well, I'm not a really big toy fan. I have a few antique toys, but a lot of my like my big obsession is fairy limps. I have multiple of them. And I mean multiple, but them are mine collection.
SPEAKER_01I did have a bad run on Whatnot there for a while, and I bought a lot of stuff, especially from Jennifer Vintage, who's going to be doing our Whatnot show here every Thursday night at DB and Company.
SPEAKER_00I think it'll be really fun, Tom. You'll also get to see our store every Thursday, new items stocked, and you'll get to shop at the store with us.
SPEAKER_01And you know that we're paying our vendors for their items, but we're running them at a dollar.
SPEAKER_00So we all need y'all to run them up, buy them a bunch of stuff. We're going to have about a hundred. How many items are we going to handpick the first show?
SPEAKER_01Probably like a hundred.
SPEAKER_00Like a hundred? That we're going to personally handpick. So it's going to be like our favorites between me and Dalton, Jennifer, and maybe a few other people.
SPEAKER_01And I think I want, I talked to her, I think we're going to pick them by Monday. Pick them, buy them, get everything bought by Monday. And then I want to do a Whatnot cabinet. So you come in the store, you see what's in the Whatnot cabinet, and it might be this Indiana hen that you really, really want, but we've already sold it for the Whatnot show. So you got to tune in on Thursday night. You might get it for a dollar.
SPEAKER_00And who knows what else we'll have by then? Might be some pie plates in there. Now, them pie plates are really cute, but some of them prices on some of them are outrageous.
SPEAKER_01We plan on being a little more affordable.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we went in there and that furniture was absolutely gorgeous, but I'm not sure who could afford that.
SPEAKER_01I don't know, but it is not me. I mean, like a $5,000 chest of drawers, chest of drawers, whoever he is, not my thing.
SPEAKER_00But let me tell you, and I don't know who would have a house that big, but some of them pieces were X like at least 10 foot tall.
SPEAKER_01I know. Probably out of a castle.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, probably out of the bit more mansion over there.
SPEAKER_01I posted that TikTok and that Meek Auction in Chattanooga commented on it. They have a lot of big stuff.
SPEAKER_00Really? How's their pricing?
SPEAKER_01I don't know. I haven't gone to an auction. I just saw it.
SPEAKER_00I didn't know if you could see their stuff on the TikTok or whatever. And let me tell you, I didn't know so many people had antique stuff, but I have had so many people reach out to me letting me know that they are wanting to get rid of some stuff and want me to come look at it. I love all this. But let me tell you, we have bunches of stuff that we still gotta go through.
SPEAKER_01I know. He kept calling me while I was at Telling Speak, and I said, no more merchandise. Yes, I want everything that these people have to sell, but no more merchandise because we have 3,000 square feet of stock room over here. We haven't built it out yet because it's not air conditioned and I don't like to shop in the heat, but it's full.
SPEAKER_00And Dalton isn't one of them people that likes to go through boxes of stuff, so that's left to me and my mom and a few other people.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that that's not my thing.
SPEAKER_00Let me tell you, if you take my mom and dad to an estate sale, especially an auction, you can bet my dollar is gonna my dad is gonna buy anything that's a dollar.
SPEAKER_01We're gonna call him Big Dollar Bailey.
SPEAKER_00How many boxes did he buy for a dollar one time?
SPEAKER_01All of them. All of them. I don't know. Whatever those people accumulated in their life, he bought and it is over there.
SPEAKER_00Some of the stuff I don't know about, but some stuff is pretty neat that we found.
SPEAKER_01We did get some 70s furniture that I thought I would decorate with in here when we were gonna paint 70s colors, but I still think that them pieces are pretty cool. I like that glider.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. We just got cleaned up a little bit. Get the old smell out of it. So back to the thing that I asked you. So what is your final answer on what you think shouldn't be so popular right now? Are you still on the toys? Okay, tell me what's popular. Um you got the duck stuff, you got all the chickens, I mean all the hens on nest, fairy lamps, bee boxes.
SPEAKER_01I'd like to have one of those.
SPEAKER_00Let me tell you, they're very pretty, but I'm not paying $400 for a glass bee box. Are you?
SPEAKER_01Well, I pay a lot for some of those chickens.
SPEAKER_00We're running out of glass holding space at the house, let me tell you.
SPEAKER_01Oh, look at all the room we have now, though.
SPEAKER_00So, what else is popular? The duck stuff is really hot right now, but we love the duck stuff.
SPEAKER_01Oh, for sure, yeah. I can't wait to hang it up on the wall.
SPEAKER_00And what do y'all think? I think that we might hang a few taxidermy things up on the wall that um our family has hunted and killed over the years, so they probably won't be for sale, but I think it'd be a good little accent piece.
SPEAKER_01All the people are gonna come for us for being hunters. I'm sorry, we grew up in Tennessee, it's what we do.
SPEAKER_00We didn't kill them. But family from the past has. I saw it driving down the side of the road and I found it in the middle of the woods, even though I fell through the snow when I stepped into it.
SPEAKER_01I really like the wooden ducks too. I know I have a bunch, but I do like those.
SPEAKER_00I think the best thing about the wooden ducks is each one is different. Like you'll find some wooden ones, you'll find some ceramic ones, different shapes, different sizes, different colors, different types of ducks. Like right now, we have a little duck set that's a mom and her three babies, and they like hang off the side of a um table. The ones that we found at the Wilted Rose antique store in Crossville, I'm pretty sure.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's the one.
SPEAKER_00I really like the antique store. So if y'all haven't checked it out, go down there because they have tons of fairy lamps and duck stuff and all that little stuff like that.
SPEAKER_01They have a bunch of that heart stuff too. Yeah. Like the quilt rack that we have.
SPEAKER_00You just had a few chickens as well, like hands on nest. Her first like three hands um Indiana Hands on Nest came from a little store in Marival, and this lady wanted like five dollars for them.
SPEAKER_01I'm not even sure that's Marival. I don't even know if that's a town. I don't know, but it's somewhere between Marival and Townsend. And it's a little white house on the right, and you're taking your life in your own hands when you go in there because it might collapse, but they had everything.
SPEAKER_00And that was when we first started going antiquing. So they like they was only five dollars, right? I think we gave five dollars for each of them.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, I we got more than two Indiana hands up like 20 bucks.
SPEAKER_00And they like now they had to have some cleaning because they had some dirt on them.
SPEAKER_01Probably one owner hands right there.
SPEAKER_00We have been to so many antique stores across the United States. We have been to every state in the United States except for uh Hawaii and Alaska, which Dalton's been to Hawaii. I've not, so I'll just like two more to finish up my states.
SPEAKER_01I really think he just wanted a store because we run out of room on the walls.
SPEAKER_00What can I say? I like bandicks.
SPEAKER_01You're really on that painted saw cook still too, aren't you?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I love anything painted. I I even have a woman that sends me freshly painted saws. Her name's Lois Armstrong. I don't know if anybody knows her. Um, but you also check her stuff out. She has a booth in Survival. She's from Rutledge, Tennessee.
SPEAKER_01What antique store is that? I mean, I know I don't know the name of it. It's the one on the left with all the big statues outside of the street.
SPEAKER_00And it has a fence around it. It's right before the La Quinta go in before you get to the knife works. Laquinta? Laquinta?
SPEAKER_01I always thought it was La Quinta.
SPEAKER_00I don't know. I'm not an English major.
SPEAKER_01Isn't that don't they have like a Frisch's Big Boy for sale in the parking lot? Yeah. That one.
SPEAKER_00I'm not sure the name of it. But she always sends me her little collection that she's done. She's an an older lady, very sweet. And she's done some amazing work. I probably have how many painted things? I mean, that's painted saws, painted um ash scoopers, painted oil cans, a painted sifter, some painted um cast iron skillets. Plows. Yeah, some painted plows.
SPEAKER_01If you can paint it, he's got it.
SPEAKER_00Painted rocks. Oh, and one of my favorite things also is a painted sand dollar that has a pelican on it because I'm a big beach person. I love finding um shells. I have millions of shells everywhere I go. I get shells. My bathroom, our bathroom is all done in like a beach theme. It has sailboats, shells, pelicans, blues.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I remember the you would you call that a goose or a duck that we found on the beach.
SPEAKER_00I'd say probably um either a goose or a swan.
SPEAKER_01It could be a big duck. I don't know. Like one of those white ducks.
SPEAKER_00It's a swan, I'm pretty sure.
SPEAKER_01No, it's not not the same thing. I don't know. Anyway, this big wooden waterfowl carving was on the beach that we were walking on in Cape Cod in the is that March?
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01It was just laying out there and it washed up. I guess I don't know. So we picked it up and we were on this little hiking trail. I had to carry that thing for like what four miles?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Well, you did like a total of seven miles looking for sea glass that day. So I carry this wood-carved bird for four miles, and I know we stopped to talk to some people, and they were probably like, what, why does he have the funniest part about it is the person that we stopped to talk to was trying to help a um some type of waterfowl that whenever it gets out of water, if it gets on land, it can't do anything. So she was trying to help it, and we was carrying a wooden No, no, we we weren't carrying a wooden wooden thing.
SPEAKER_01I was carrying a wooden duck or whatever it was.
SPEAKER_00Well, Dawn had to carry that because I was carrying all the precious sea glass that I had found.
SPEAKER_01And she probably thought I was a lunatic out here walking on the beach with my wooden duck.
SPEAKER_00But we brought it home. We wrote a little note on it. So if anything ever happens to us, you'll have a message to go with it. You know what another thing is I really don't understand why it's so hot right now, other than decorating your wall is the little butter pads or plates, the little butter plates. Like the little round saucers that they call them butter plates, or didn't I get one of those? You've got some off whatnot from your free gifts because you ordered so much. Oh. Let me tell you, Dalton over here loves to support people, which I'm definitely okay with it. But some of the things he got some items that were just like random. There's like a pink glass.
SPEAKER_01First of all, I like to compete. And if I bid on something on whatnot, I don't want to lose.
SPEAKER_00Y'all don't want to know his whatnot bill used to be.
SPEAKER_01Why don't you?
SPEAKER_00But I still get on there and look sometimes because I like to see what I can find. There's such good stuff. There was one time that I literally got two painted saws that was from like Illinois or somewhere like that for a dollar. A dollar? Yeah. They're a dollar for two. We should sell those. No, they're hanging on my wall. They're not coming down. Listen, if you take this stuff off the wall, the house might fall down. I have so many painted saws.
SPEAKER_01Every wall.
SPEAKER_00No, not every wall. Only the walls in the living room and the kitchen.
SPEAKER_01In the hallway?
SPEAKER_00I don't have any in the hallway.
SPEAKER_01But the walls are full.
SPEAKER_00Of pictures. That's precious moments. I will take any precious moment every day.
SPEAKER_01So kind of our thought for DB and Company when we were thinking about an antique store was what do we like and what do we not like? And how do we make our store the best? So we don't like it if it's hot. We don't like it if it stinks. We don't like it if it's dark. We don't like it if it has all that coupon stuff.
SPEAKER_00And we for sure don't like any little critters running around. I mean, the first week we got in this place, I done called the cookie pest control to make sure we didn't have anything. Luckily, this place was pretty clean except a few little house spiders. But spiders are my biggest fear.
SPEAKER_01I just feel like if I'm spending my Saturday to go out antiquing and shopping and eating dinner and enjoying my life, I don't want to be in misery.
SPEAKER_00No. But I like to get a little dirty digging around on some stuff. So it doesn't bother me that bad to digging stuff, but I don't want to do it all day long. 'Cause I don't really like the heat.
SPEAKER_01You know, I don't like a store that's too clean either though.
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_01Cause then I I know that I'm not going to find a deal.
SPEAKER_00Or their stuff's going to be way too high.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Like those little stores up north.
SPEAKER_00If you ever go up north, then people up there are just so like, Yoda, you can look at whatever you want. We'll talk about negotiating. And they usually give you pretty good deals.
SPEAKER_01Remember that barn we went to in Maine? It had like the five foot hall ceiling and we were crawling around back there.
SPEAKER_00We brought home an old window from that barn. Is that where that came from? Yeah. Did I haul that in the car? Yeah. From Maine? Yep. On top of all we put it on top of all our stuff so it wouldn't get broke. And it's hanging up in our living room right now. Over our couch. And it looks like I mean the only thing that's missing is it cut out and we'd have a window added in the living room. I mean that's lead paint. It's old. Probably. I really didn't mess with it. Because I was I was afraid to clean it because I didn't know what the paint could be. What does lead paint do anyway? Do you know? You I mean, lead paint was supposed to last longer up.
SPEAKER_01Oh no, I'm gonna ask Chat GPT. You know what else is my antique store pet peeve for grumpy people.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I don't want to go into a place that the person is grumpy whenever I come to the store. Like I would like whenever I go in somewhere as I say, hey, how are you? Like, I mean, I feel like that's how it should be.
SPEAKER_01Don't even get me started on the hey, how are you thing? Because you know, when I worked at the hospital, I had a chronic habit of saying, hey, how are you to everybody we passed in public out of habit. And nobody like people don't even look up anymore. Like they're just walking around and they're in their own world, like there's not even other people out here living. I mean, how hard is it to say, hey, hello, hi, how are you?
SPEAKER_00Most people don't even acknowledge that you speak to them.
SPEAKER_01They don't even know you're in the world. I don't know if they know they're in the world.
SPEAKER_00This world has just come to that now, though.
SPEAKER_01I don't like it. We're not gonna be that way.
SPEAKER_00No. And I knew I forgot to tell you about this little Bible.
SPEAKER_01I wasn't done with my my I'm sorry, go ahead. My other thing is I don't want to be followed either, though. Like I need you to be friendly, but not overly friendly. Cause I want to shop in private, you know?
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I don't want to feel like you're watching me. Yeah, I don't want to feel watched, but I don't want to feel like a burden.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Like I want you to come enjoy the store, look at everything that you want to look at, and enjoy your time. Like, I don't want nobody to be hateful to nobody. I mean, I know that not everybody's gonna make everybody happy, but I want this place to bring people joy. Yeah, it's not supposed to be grumpy in here.
SPEAKER_01Okay, go ahead.
SPEAKER_00So I also got this Bible at a yard sale the other day. It wasn't for sale, but it was given to me. And on the front, it was given to this lady um in Jacksonville, Florida, on July 1963. It's uh just a regular old Bible, but it zips up. And it is a let's see. It's the Holy Bible containing the Old and New Testament um authorized King James Version.
SPEAKER_01They gave it to you? Oh, we can't sell that.
SPEAKER_00And it's like like it has births and like a family tree in it.
SPEAKER_01Isn't it crazy though how like you get old or you you know you die or you get ready to move into whatever, whatever you're doing with your life, and all your stuff is just like being sold. Boxed up and sold off.
SPEAKER_00Or given away. Like this one even has pictures in it for it to be from like I'm not sure what year this Bible was made. But I just I do know that it was given to whoever this lady is in 1963, and it contains all these great pictures and they're in color and artwork. Like that was probably expensive back then. And it zips.
SPEAKER_01I do like that about antique stores, though it's like people's stuff doesn't just get thrown away or like abused.
SPEAKER_00Like people fix it, they make it look like it did when it was brand new.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean I like stuff that has a story.
unknownWhich is cool.
SPEAKER_01So what do we have left to get the store ready?
SPEAKER_02What else do we need to work on? We have to cap out our walls, we gotta fix the few lots, put some tile down in the bathroom and make some places for people to hang some dines. And we just gotta build one more row of walls and put some lattice up. And just four walls, not even a whole row. Yeah. And we have to commit our cash register.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. It's that wanna take long?
SPEAKER_02No.
SPEAKER_00But that'll be a final contrat. I think people are gonna be moving in soon. Yeah, I can't wait.
SPEAKER_01Me neither. I can't wait to see how everybody decorates their booth. I feel bad about it though, because all these people are gonna bring their stuff in and they're gonna set up and I'm gonna wanna buy it all. And that's not fair because I want the people that come shop to have an opportunity to buy it, so I'm gonna I'm gonna be patient.
SPEAKER_00Is it good thing that you're gonna be out of town when they start moving this in?
SPEAKER_02I'm not gonna shop until we open. But I'm gonna want to. I'm gonna have my favorites picked out.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I don't want to be the person that as soon as somebody brings something new and that it instantly gets gone because we like it.
SPEAKER_02Like I want everybody to have an option to go through and find it. Yeah. And we have enough stuff. We've talked about a lot of stuff. Yeah. You think we covered enough for this first episode? I don't know, but I guess this is what after hours is gonna be. I guess so. Could have been after dark, but I messed it up once. After hours. I said after dark, and he was like, You don't even care about our post.
SPEAKER_01We're gonna have so much stuff to talk about when we open.
SPEAKER_00I can't wait to have like um special guests.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we can we can talk to our vendors and we can talk about the people that come in here and the things that we wish that we had bought because you know people are gonna come buy stuff and it's gonna be at the restaurant. I'm like, ah I'd seen that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So okay, well I think I don't know how long we've been talking, but I think this is a good first podcast.
SPEAKER_00Hope it covered everything. And listen, if y'all got any questions or y'all us to talk about anything, shoot us a message.
SPEAKER_01I think the kids call it a DM now.
SPEAKER_00Well, I'm kind of an old cell, so I don't say all the hip things.
SPEAKER_01I think that's what they call it. So DM us. Follow us on Facebook, like us on TikTok.
SPEAKER_00Also check out our w our wing truck. I mean, we'll be starting that back up full speed as soon as it gets cooler. It's just been way too hot this summer. Let me finish.
SPEAKER_01And find our podcast, wherever you eat your podcast.
SPEAKER_02We should be on Apple or Spotify or YouTube. And of course we're gonna post on TikTok and Facebook. All right. Is that it? I think so. Well, good night, everybody. It was a pleasure talking to y'all.
